The following Virtual Trail Rider Challenge patterns are for purchase for personal practice use. These Trail Challenge patterns are from previous Virtual Trail Rider Challenges designed by Kelli Paulson. Patterns focus on improving your horsemanship and partnership through the use of trail obstacles.

Courses are designed to fit in small arenas and can be set up in a small or larger pattern. 

Each set of patterns contains:

  • Set Up Guide with obstacle suggestions
  • IN-HAND COURSE 
  • BASIC COURSE – Walk Only or Walk/Trot
  • TRAIL RIDER COURSE – Walk/Trot/Simple Loping
  • EXTREME COURSE – Walk/Trot/Lope

Virtual Trail Rider Challenge #1 - Practice Pattern

Our first VTRC! Fun pattern. Each challenge has become more challenging – so if you are new, this is a good one to practice.

Obstacles Used:

  • 6 Ground Poles
  • 1 Bridge
  •  Uprights/Jump Stands
  • Rope Gate  (2 Uprights plus rope)
  • 6 Pool Noodles or item to push through (2 Uprights plus Noodles)
  • Rope Gate & Noodles use a total of 3 Uprights
  • Item to Carry

 

Horsemanship elements:

  • Sidepass over a log
  • Pivot on Hind Quarters and Forehand
  • Backing a “U”
  • Transitions
  • Sending (In-Hand)
  • Carry item
  • Open and close gate
  • Gaits: Walk, Extended Walk, Trot, Extended Trot
  • Curves and Straight lines

Virtual Trail Rider Challenge #2 - Practice Pattern

This course uses basic obstacles and horsemanship principles in a challenging way. Course uses corners which will help prepare you for future courses.

Obstacles Used:

  • 7-8 Ground Poles
  • 1 Bridge
  • 1 Tarp
  • Uprights/Jump Stands
  • Rope Gate  (2 Uprights plus rope)
  • 6 Pool Noodles or item to push through (2 Uprights plus Noodles)
  • Rope Gate & Noodles use a total of 3 Uprights
  • Item to Carry and/or Drag

Horsemanship elements:

  • Sidepass over a log
  • Pivot on Hind Quarters and Forehand
  • Backing a “Z”
  • Halt and Settle
  • Transitions
  • Sending (In-Hand)
  • Carry item
  • Open and close gate
  • Gaits: Walk, Extended Walk, Trot, Extended Trot
  • Curves and Straight lines
  • Corners
